Classifieds Theme or Plugin? Classified Listing, WPAdverts, HivePress and Directorist Compared

If you already run a WordPress site and want to add a classifieds section, a plugin is the obvious move: install it, add a page for the ads, and keep your design. If the classifieds board is the site, the choice is less obvious. A dedicated theme brings the design and the ad engine together, while a plugin on a general theme keeps them apart and lets you swap either one.

This comparison looks at the four classifieds plugins people actually choose between, Classified Listing, WPAdverts, HivePress and Directorist, against the theme route, using our own PremiumPress Classifieds Theme as the example. The question throughout is what it takes to charge for an ad, because every plugin here is free to install, but in all four the features that earn money cost extra. Figures were checked on 11 September 2026 on WordPress.org and each vendor's pricing page, and the sources, including owner reviews and support threads, are at the end.

The short answer

Choose a plugin when classifieds are one part of a bigger site, when you want to keep a theme you like, or when you want to start at no cost and pay only when the board earns. Expect to buy a Pro licence or add-ons, and often WooCommerce, once you want featured ads, bump-ups or card payments, and expect those to renew yearly.

Choose a theme when the board is the business. The ad pages, search, member area and payments are designed together, there is one thing to update instead of four, and the first paid ad can go live on the day you install it. The price of that is less freedom to change your design without changing the engine.

Classified Listing

Classified Listing from RadiusTheme is the engine inside Classima, available on its own for any theme. The free plugin handles front-end posting, categories and search, and takes payment by PayPal or offline transfer, so a basic paid board is possible without spending anything. It has more than 9,000 active installs and a 4.8 rating from 138 reviews on WordPress.org, last updated 7 September 2026.

The features that tend to earn the most are Pro: top ads, bump-up ads, seller subscriptions, live chat, and the Stripe, Authorize.net and WooCommerce gateways. Pro is currently $39 a year for one site (regularly $49), $99 a year for the one-site bundle, $244 a year for unlimited sites, or $279 once for a one-site lifetime licence.

WPAdverts

WPAdverts is the lightweight option: it adds a posting form, an ads list and a single-ad page to whatever theme you run, and stays out of the way of your design. The core includes a payments module with bank transfer. It has more than 4,000 active installs and a 4.8 rating from 160 reviews on WordPress.org, last updated 2 September 2026.

Almost everything else is an extension sold in plans. Start-Up is $59 a year or $179 lifetime for up to three sites, and its group includes PayPal, fees per category and reCAPTCHA. Professional is $149 a year or $449 lifetime for ten sites, adding Stripe, WooCommerce, custom fields and maps. Professional Plus is $299 a year or $899 lifetime for unlimited sites, adding memberships.

HivePress

HivePress is a listings framework rather than a classifieds plugin as such, which is why it pairs with a free theme, ListingHive, for classifieds and directories. Its free extensions are the most generous here: messages, reviews, favourites, geolocation and claim listings all cost nothing. It has more than 10,000 active installs and a 4.9 rating from 221 reviews on WordPress.org, last updated 26 August 2026.

It is also the most developer-oriented. Paid listing packages are a free extension, but HivePress's own help article says to set up WooCommerce first. Memberships, search alerts and the marketplace are $39 each as lifetime licences for one site, or every extension is $99 a year (regularly $398). A 2026 WordPress.org reviewer praised the clean code and free tier but found that almost every adjustment needed CSS, and often PHP.

Directorist with dClassified

dClassified theme for the Directorist plugin

Directorist is the most installed plugin in this comparison and markets itself for classified listings as well as directories, which makes it the natural pick for a site that needs both. For a classifieds look, its maker sells the dClassified theme, which requires the Directorist plugin and includes live chat, pricing plans, map listings, PayPal and Stripe, and social login. dClassified is $69 a year for one site, $139 for up to five, or $249 for unlimited sites.

Directorist has more than 20,000 active installs and a 4.6 rating from 697 reviews on WordPress.org, last updated 2 September 2026. That rating is the lowest of the four, and it includes 43 one-star reviews. The same reviewer who struggled with HivePress in 2026 left one of them for Directorist, saying hardcoded styles fought his theme and major updates wiped out his customisations.

The theme route: PremiumPress Classifieds Theme

A classifieds theme replaces the stack rather than adding to it. What it costs to charge for ads in year one

For one site with card payments and featured ads, the plugin routes land in a similar band. Classified Listing needs Pro, from $39 a year at the current price, for Stripe and top ads. WPAdverts needs the $149 Professional plan for Stripe, or the $59 Start-Up plan if PayPal is enough. HivePress needs WooCommerce, which is free, plus any $39 extensions you want. dClassified is $69 a year. Each of those renews in year two unless you bought a lifetime licence.

The theme route costs $99 once; renewal is optional and only matters if you want updates and support after six months. For several boards the gap widens: Classified Listing, dClassified and WPAdverts charge $244 to $299 a year for unlimited sites, while the theme licence already covers them.

Adding classifieds to an existing site: Classified Listing if you build with Elementor and want PayPal free, or WPAdverts if you want the lightest touch on your design.

Should I use a classifieds theme or a plugin?
