WordPress Dating Theme or Dating Plugin? Building a Dating Site in 2026
By Mark Fail ·

There are two ways to build a dating site on WordPress. You can take a community plugin like BuddyPress and add matching, messaging and payments one plugin at a time. Or you can install a dating theme that ships with most of that already wired together.
Both work. They fail in different places, though, and the failures show up after launch, when members start paying and some of them start misbehaving. This guide compares the plugin route with three dating themes, and looks hard at the parts that decide whether a dating site survives. That means verification, paid memberships, messaging and licensing.
We checked every product on 1 October 2026. This is about mainstream dating and matchmaking sites only.

Theme or plugin
A dating site needs more than a social network does. Members want profiles with photos and details, search by age, distance and interests, some form of matching, and private messages. You need a way to charge, usually by holding back messaging or "who liked you" until someone pays. And you need tools to keep fake profiles and pests out.
The plugin route gives you the most control. BuddyPress handles profiles, friends and messages, and you choose the other pieces. The price is the time spent making five plugins from five developers agree with each other, and every update is a chance for one of them to break.
A dating theme makes those choices for you. Setup is faster, and the features were built to work together. You're tied to that theme, though. Many ThemeForest dating themes are themselves BuddyPress plus a bundle of plugins with a design on top, so you inherit both sets of updates.
Our rule of thumb is simple enough. If you have a developer and unusual requirements, start with plugins. If you want to launch in weeks and charge members early, start with a theme.
BuddyPress

BuddyPress is the free base for most WordPress community sites. It adds member profiles with custom fields, friend connections, groups, activity streams and private messages to any theme. It has 90,000 active installs and a 4.1 rating from 375 reviews on WordPress.org, and the last release was in July 2026.
On its own it isn't a dating site. Its built-in messages are plain, so most owners add Better Messages. That plugin has 10,000 installs, a 4.8 rating and an update on 30 September 2026. It adds real-time chat, file attachments and voice and video calls. The free version delivers messages over AJAX, and there's a paid WebSocket version for busier sites.

For payments you'd add a membership plugin such as Paid Member Subscriptions, which has 10,000 installs and was updated on 29 September 2026. Then you link plans to features. That's the fiddly part, because the membership plugin knows about pages and posts, not about who may send a first message.
Matching and verification are the weakest links. Match Me for BuddyPress has only 200 installs. Verified Member for BuddyPress has 3,000 installs, but it only adds a badge that you award by hand or by user role, and its last update was in May 2025.
Pros
- Free core with a large community
- Groups and forums if your site is also a community
- You pick every piece and can swap any of them
Cons
- Five or more plugins to configure and keep in step
- Gating messages behind a paid plan takes custom work
- Matching add-ons have tiny user bases
Sweet Date

Sweet Date is the long-running best seller in this category, with 10,119 sales on ThemeForest. It's built on BuddyPress and adds a matching system, profile navigation, predefined profile fields and a member search on the homepage. The demo opens with "I am a", "Looking for", age and city fields, which is what dating visitors expect.
Paid plans come through a bundled membership plugin that takes recurring payments through Stripe, Authorize.net or PayPal, with content access set per level. Members get an inbox, sent messages and a compose page. The item page doesn't mention member verification.
It costs $59 with a Regular Licence and was last updated on 8 February 2026. A dating site that charges members falls under Envato's rule that paid access to the end product needs an Extended Licence. For Sweet Date that's $1,600.
Pros
- Over 10,000 sales, so plenty of people have solved your problems before
- Dating search and matching on top of BuddyPress
- Recurring membership payments included
Cons
- $1,600 Extended Licence once members pay
- No verification mentioned on the item page
- Inherits BuddyPress's update cycle as well as its own
LoveDate

LoveDate is newer and closer to a dating app in feel. The item page lists likes, Super Likes sold in packages, Rewind, stories, real-time chat with file sharing, profile verification and a matching engine with percentage scores and radius search. It also brings groups and forums, so it suits a dating site with a community side.
Under the hood it's a stack. The bundled list includes BuddyPress, Elementor, WooCommerce, Paid Memberships Pro, bbPress, BP Profile Search and the author's own core and matching plugins. That's a lot of moving parts for one site to keep updated.
It costs $59, has 333 sales, and was updated on 21 August 2026. The Extended Licence, which you'd need once members pay, is $3,400.
Pros
- App-style features like Super Likes, Rewind and stories
- Verification and match percentages listed
- Updated recently
Cons
- $3,400 Extended Licence for a paid site
- Depends on a long list of bundled plugins
- Small sales base so far
PremiumPress (ours)

This is the theme we sell, and it takes the opposite approach to the two above. There's no BuddyPress underneath. Profiles, search, matching, messaging and memberships are all part of the PremiumPress Dating Theme itself, and there are 30 homepage designs to start from. Duet, above, is one of them.
Matching is two-way. A member says who they're looking for, and every profile gets a score based on six things, which are gender, age, distance, shared interests, smoking and drinking. The score averages how well they fit you and how well you fit them, and only you see it. A Daily Matches panel picks the best few each morning. There's also Hit or Miss voting, which turns mutual likes into a match, and winks limited to one per person per day.

Memberships work differently from the plugin route. A plan can switch on specific things, and the theme enforces each one in code. Those include sending a first message, chatting with a match, read receipts, seeing who liked you, advanced search filters and monthly profile boosts. Free members still see how many people liked them, but not who. Gifts are paid for with credits. There are also private one-to-one video calls that run directly between the two browsers, with nothing recorded.
The limits are real. The "Verified" badge is a box you tick by hand, and the account check only confirms an email address or phone number. There's no photo or ID check. The age gate asks visitors to confirm they're 18 or over, which proves nothing. Video calls work for most people for free, but members on some mobile networks need a TURN server, and that's a paid service you'd add. There are no groups or forums. It costs $99 once for every site you own, with six months of updates.
Pros
- Matching, messaging and memberships without extra plugins
- Plans can gate first messages, who-liked-you and boosts
- One licence for unlimited sites you own
Cons
- No photo or ID verification
- Some video calls need a paid TURN server
- No groups or forums
Safety
Every dating site attracts fake profiles and scammers within weeks of launch. None of the options here solves that on its own, so plan for it whichever route you pick.
Verification
There are three levels. Email or phone checks stop throwaway accounts and are easy to switch on. A photo check, where the member takes a selfie that a moderator compares with their profile pictures, catches most catfishing. ID checks are the strongest and usually come from a paid identity service. Start with email or phone verification for everyone, and award a visible badge only after a photo check you've done yourself.
Reporting and blocking
Members must be able to block someone and report a profile in two clicks. Read every report. Most scam accounts copy the same few patterns, such as stolen model photos, a quick request to move to WhatsApp, and a story about money. Delete them fast and keep a note of the email domains and IP ranges they come from.
Age
An "I'm over 18" button is a statement, not a check. Say clearly in your terms that members must be adults, and act quickly on any report that someone is underage.
Payments
Charge for things that cost you nothing to give and that members value, like sending a first message or seeing who liked them. Leave searching and browsing free, because a site that hides every profile behind a paywall never gets enough members to be worth paying for.
Final thoughts
For a dating site that's really a community, with groups and forums as important as matches, BuddyPress with Better Messages and a membership plugin gives you the most freedom. Expect to spend time making the pieces fit.
Sweet Date is the safe ThemeForest pick, with more than 10,000 buyers. LoveDate feels more like a modern dating app. Both run on BuddyPress, and both need an Extended Licence of $1,600 or $3,400 once members pay.
The PremiumPress Dating Theme suits owners who want paid features like first messages and boosts enforced without plugins, and who may run more than one site. Plan your own photo checks, because the theme won't do them.
