Updating to latest version

    I’m about to update from 3.9 to the latest version (4.2?) but I’m a bit wary of doing this because it’s the first update since my site went live.

    Do I have to disable and delete the previous theme before uploading the new one or can I simply upload and overwrite the core files (everything apart from my child theme)?

    When updating in the past I’ve lost widget and display settings which obviously I don’t want to happen this time.

    Any suggestions?
