Tested a few banner-image sizes quickly and it looks like 400px wide by 80-90px high is about the max size banner you can get in there with the present layout/css.

I would suggest you “split” your banner into a logo and “banner-ad” section with the same background color as your banner section. That way nobody will notice its not a solid banner … 🙂
