Featured Items Homepage Problem

I’m having issues with the featured items on the homepage – my understanding is that if you mark a product featured it should appear on the homepage. This is working but I only want two (I have selected ‘2’ on Display Settings > Homepage).. when I mark a third item featured it shows up alongside the other two. The correct behaviour is to show the next time the site is opened / page refreshed. I have deselected the third item as ‘featured’ for the time being. Please help!
