404 Errors by Google bots

    Hi, just wondering if anyone is familiar with Google search bots and can explain why they find and render these type of URLs as 404 not found errors eg.
    directory/listing-category/moving-storage/?orderby=date&order=desc
    Sure there are no listings currently under this category but is a 404 the only way? Any suggestions will be appreciated.
    My site has just been launched so have a few empty categories naturally.
