How do I activate a child theme

I have the Real Estate responsive theme. I want to use a child theme downloaded from PP. I uploaded it as per normal theme uploads. Activated it but get a message:

“The parent theme could not be found. You will need to install the parent theme, [XXX], before you can use this child theme”.

Is there another procedure that explains how these child themes are activated?
