Upgrade from v 6.6.6 to v 8 issue – file to big to upload

The upgrade to version 6.6.6 was automatic, but I have not had any other upgrades since…. I tried to upload the latest version manually but I get an error message that the file is too big. Will there be an auto update for future upgrades? I have kept my theme very simple and basic so it will not have issues with auto upgrades….. Not sure what to do next?
