HI, I have "Business" category under which I have three subcategories: "A", "B" and "C". I can see "Business" and all three subcategories in the homepage. However, if I go to "Business" category page, I do not see "A", "B' and "C" subcategories in that category page, but only directory listings. Is this supposed to happen? Or do I have to change some setting? Anyway this behavior doesn't seem right. In every directory I visit, each category page shows a list of subcategories underneath it, and then actual listings, so that visitors can navigate the directory in a hierarchical fashion.

yes your only supposed to see the category your viewing.
If you use the category sidebar widget and display all categories, it will show sub category when viewing the parent one.

Thanks yosef. Just voted.
Honestly I couldn’t believe this feature is not available!!
Not all directories have sidebar layout. Regardless of layout, we need a way to see sub-directories in each category.

I know Dan that was nice in version 7 i don’t know why Mark removed it in responsive .

I am almost there with the modification .
you can test it here
click any category or subcategory from the main page and in the next page look at the top of the sidebar widget.
