Limiting size of listing in listing slider

We’re building a directory of holistic medical providers and would like to have only an image and a small blurb for the listing slider; however, it pulls in all of the listing, rather than just part of it (and some are quite long).

I understand that there’s an option to limit the size of each listing, but is there any way to allow the members to input whatever length they choose but to limit the length in the slider?
