How to set homepage, “Recent Listings” to a custom post type?

    I am trying to set up an Events area with my listings using the Responsive Directory Theme and would like to see the Homepage Recent Listings to be ordered by the custom field type ‘begin-date’ with most recent first then descending. Any help would be appreciated!
