How Customizable is the directory Theme?

HI there,

I have been having trouble with the most basic (seemingly) aspect of this Directory theme. From the description it implies that you are able to FULLY customise your theme (using a child theme), so that you can have the site that you have designed (I have had mine designed by a web designer) while retaining the functionality of the directory press theme. But this seems not to be the case, I cannot even put my own logo on there without trouble, nothing seems to work, the videos are outdated and the theme I paid for doesn’t even have all the menu options that show on the video (in the admin area).
I have wasted days trying to research, watch video, mess around with the theme. Nothing seems to work and it seems that the truth is that there are minimal customizable options, and that you must use the basic layout given to you and edit only certain things.

If anyone knows if fully being able to customise the layout, positioning, colours, features etc is possible please can you let me know and if there are any suggestions for videos or articles that would be so appreciated.
