Enable automatic selection of subcategories if parent category is selected?

Hi, we would like to implement an automatic selection of all subcategories in the listing when the parent category was selected. So this means if the customer selects a parent category all subcategories are automatically also selected. But he should be able to deselect some subcategories manually. Is this possible? How can we do that?
