Display subcats above search results

How can I display Sub categories above the search results. Similar to the non-responsive design.

For example use clicks on category Cars. The subcategories Used and New would appear above the seach results.

Do I need to use a hook or plugin? If so what would be the code?

Or is there a child theme that has this function?
