I’m using version 8.7
I was able to achieve what you’re looking for, I think.
Under General Setup – User Setup – turn OFF “Show First/Last Name Fields”
Under Registration Fields, add First Name with database key fname – probably should make it required even though it looks funny on the registration form because it has the red required indicator and they rest of the fields don’t, even though they are also required.
Under Registration Fields, add Last Name with the database key lname
Now when a new user registers, you can use (fname) and (lname) in your Welcome email. You can see these new fields in your WordPress Users list, but not in the typical First and Last name fields. Keep scrolling down and you will see a second First and Last name field and they work. I have not tested it further because that’s all I needed.
