Short code bracket type?

I have set up my emails in the Directory Theme 4.2 … and I receive the emails successfully when I do a dummy sign up … but I’m not getting any data included in the emails that I have used shortcodes to capture and send.

I have used curved brackets like this ( )

Should I be using square brackets like the [ ] when adding short codes to the emails?
