Registration/Membership flow

I’m a little confused and unsure of how the membership system and signup should be working.

I’ve created a membership package which is not linked to a listing package but does allow for posting one listing. I’ve also setup Paypal as the payment gateway but have it set to test (not live).

This is what happens when I register:

1) I fill out the register page and select the membership package option.
2) I’m then taken to a login page. I login with the new user details.
3) I’m then taken to the account page for a brief second before it automatically changes to a page asking me to select payment method. Note that the url is the url for the add listing page which is /add-listing/.
4) I select the pay now button and go through the steps of paying thru the Paypal test gateway.
5) It then spits me back to the callback page which thanks me for the order and shows the payment was complete.
6) From there if I go to /my-account/ it keeps throwing me back to the payment page (url is /add-listing/).

I note that in the admin, the user details have the membership set to nothing. If I change the user’s account to the membership package, then he can access the my account page.

This seems like strange behaviour overall. Does anyone know what’s going on? Is this the expected chain of events?
