Membership directory approach questions

Hi, I just purchased the Directory Theme and have been going through it.

What I want to do is display a list of members. This list should be geographically searchable and have various custom fields included such as business address, contact details, bio, etc.

It seems there may be 2 ways to go about this:

1) Display member profiles and not make use of the “listings” capability. But if doing that are the members then searchable as the listings would be? Can they be categorised as the listings can be?

2) Use the listings feature and hide members. Currently by default the theme shows both a list of members and listings. In my case this would be redundant. Can I hide the members from view and setup a subscription system so a user signs up for membership (subscription) and can only publish one listing? That listing will be publicly available while their member profile will not.

Are any of these approaches possible and does anyone have any suggestions?
