Way to do it:
– Install WP htaccess Control Plugin
– wordpress settings
– htaccess control
– click “remove taxonomies and author base”
– put the checkmark beside the 2nd remove categories base option ( the one with https://yourwebsite.com/listing_term in the detail)
This worked for me without having to refresh my permalinks, although I must say that I went into my permalinks beforehand and made sure the “category slug name” field was empty.

Just wanted to post this as a solution which I found to remove the Category Slug Name in your permalinks, making it possible to change:
http://www.cheesefactories.com/cheese-factories/london
into:
http://www.cheesefactories.com/london
it’s much neater from a user experience point of view.
