Question about Advanced Search

I admit that I’m very confused and frustrated at this point, so I want to ask you in advance to please be patient with me. I have perused the forum, watched videos repeatedly, tried many different queries and setups, but can’t get the advanced search to work the way I want. Now I’m plain and simply confused all the way around and have deleted all but one test listing, starting from scratch.

1. Where can I find which version of the Directory theme I have? I bought it about one week ago. I see forum discussions about the beta version, and I’m wondering if the trouble I’m having stems from it being a beta release? Probably not, but I thought I’d ask.

2. Since I was having trouble with both Google Maps and Advanced Search, I’ve disabled maps (or I’m trying to) anywhere it’s mentioned in the setup area so that I can focus on getting Advanced Search working properly since that is most definitely my priority.

3. Regarding Advanced Search, in the setup area, I selected that the State and City fields NOT be linked to Country and State respectively. However, the Advanced Search widget still does not allow me to type in the State or City.

I really want users to be able to search by country, state OR city by entering those values individually. I lost the zip code radius search altogether; maybe that is tied in with Google Maps which I shut off?

I may post in the job board area to find a sherpa to help me set this up, but at this point I just need to know if what I want is even possible with this theme.
