videos not playing

I’ve been trying to get some videos up and have a lot of problems. When I upload an avi or mpg they show as black in the media folder and only offer a link to play. A wmv is working, but it’s controls are all black.
I’ve turned off all plugins and still have the same problem. Is anyone else experiencing this? Is there a plug in for self hosted videos.
