Functional Blog?

So what is the solution to making the blog actually a functional blog? There are too many issues to name them all, but namely I cannot customize the side area, if I assign too many categories to a post it malfunctions the appearance, if a blog category is clicked on it appears the same as in the listing category search pages–which is problematic if a map is appearing at the top of the page.

Any ideas on any of this? Thanks
