New widget in Header

Hi, I’m using non-responsive directory theme with “clean” as a child theme. In the top there is an area for a banner to the right of the logo. I want to use an ad server plugin there rather than input google ad code. I’d like to turn this area into a widget. The methods I’m used to using to do this are rendering the page blank.

I also want to add a widget area to replace the submenu area to the left of the login/logout links. What’s the best method to do this? I’ve added code to functions.php to register the widgets. What do I put in the header.php and where?
