Formatting custom fields on search layout

I’ve got five custom fields defined for each listing.
I’m happily displaying them on the individual listing page.
But on the search results and slider, I only want three custom fields, and I need to format them nicely.
I’m displaying the text fields ok, but I can’t work out how to display the value of a custom field that is defined as a checkbox – what happens is that I get the serialised array contents, which is extremely messy – all I want is to show the yes or no value.

Any tips?

I had added them in the Search Listing area by name. eg
Title 1: [field1]
<br />Title 2:[field2]
<br />Title 3:[field3]
