Question about user roles – Contributor vs Author

I would like submitted listings to require approval, but once approved I’d like the author to be able to edit and re-publish them without administrator approval.

If I set my default new user role to Author, will the initial listings still require approval?

Or should I just manually update the users to Authors after their initial listing submission?
