Subcategories Question

Hello,

Is there a way to display just the subcategories for the selected parent category in a widget form? My current scenario (on localhost) is I have used the category widget on the left side of the homepage, which is great, but when I click on the category I am now greeted with the subcategories on the top of the page, which is also ok, but if there is a lot of subcategories, it kind of looks awkward, unsightly. It would be great if there were the option in the categories widget to just display the subcategories of the selected parent. Is that already an option somewhere, or is that not an option currently?
