@Liz, I have a lifetime licence for Divi as well, but as far as I know you can’t download the Divi builder (legally) without a licence. And even if you could, you will need updates eventually to avoid bugs and vulnerabilities. Of course, Mark can’t force his customers to buy a Divi licence to be able to adjust anything.
I also think Divi is a great tool, but Elementor is a really good alternative, even in the free version . At the moment, it’s even setting the pace. Elegant Themes (the company behind Divi) is running fast to catch up, but Elementor is still developing at high speed as well. They are copying each others features at a rapid pace, but at the moment Elementor seems to be better at prioritizing witch features should come first (like the header / footer builder).
Because Elementor offers so many features in the free version, and even more really great ones in the pro version, that’s the best choice Mark could have made in my opinion. Which doesn’t mean PP themes shouldn’t be compatible with the Divi builder, Oxygen and other page builders, because I think users should be able to use their own favorite page builder.
PS you say there would be no chance of conflict of interest between ET and PP, that’s not true. ET announced they are going to focus on dynamic content, which should push Divi in the direction of Toolset and PP. As I understood, you should be able to build a listing site with just Divi soon…
