I have recently updated Couponic Australia to the latest version of the Coupon theme and thought I would share some insight and choices during the process. There is going to be a wall of text though its probably worth documenting:
HOME
Homepage is using a custom shortcode which basically uses the Bootstrap Pill component to display content in a tabbed format – no homepage blocks have been added at all.
A single post url would be something like http://www.couponic.com.au/coupons/vision-direct/102853/ – following this type of strict hierarchy isn’t possible out of the box with WordPress and custom post types.
On top of this sort of re-write, expired posts will now 301 redirect to the Store page and generic and incorrect 404’s that contain the store url will also follow this re-write path i.e https://www.couponic.com.au/coupons/vision-direct/xdeleted/
Which brings me to the reasons for creating a custom Store taxonomy template, the current theme will produce a soft 404 if no coupons are found – it might be only a couple of days where your store doesn’t have a code but this would be akin to throwing your seo and link juice into the bin.
I also created a custom Taxonomy archive Template for the Stores List: https://www.couponic.com.au/store-list/ The available methods were either not responsive or didn’t work as required.
The Listing (coupon) manger is slow and unresponsive when using imported data – not sure what causes this but have reproduced it on a clean install – Using a different custom Post type than the one supplied fixes this however.
Submission process needs to be streamlined and simplified, 6.3 was awesome in this regard – this site is still on 6.3.1: https://www.pre-order.com.au/
The child theme system is at odds with the internal template system. – Moving Hosts or creating a website locally will be problematic due to this. The theme needs to be activated before the child theme and the template you are using needs to be selected.
Listing packages need a free option as per 6.3 – hacking this in drove me a little nuts.
Regardless of some minor issues, these themes are great to work with.

STORES
URL Hierarchy emphasises the importance of the Store page i.e https://www.couponic.com.au/coupons/vision-direct/

CATEGORIES
Custom cat list: https://www.couponic.com.au/categories/ nothing too exciting and a custom events tax which follows the same template: https://www.couponic.com.au/events/
