background colour in widget areas

    hi,
    I am running the responsive directory theme and have made a child theme and have made some alterations. However i am finding that the content box background colour will not alter by the design page colour tool now and i am therefore unable to change the background colours of the widget areas to my desired white. Does anyone have the code to change the colour of these areas manually?
