How to protect changes from loss during update

    I’m using the responsive directory theme with a child theme. Before I installed the child theme I made changes to the main theme. I understand that during updates changes can be lost unless they are tied to the child theme.

    How can I preserve the changes I made to the main? Can they be moved to the child? How would I do this?

    Going forward, how can I be sure the changes I make go to the child?
