AI Assistant & MCP
AI Assistant & MCP
How to let an AI agent such as Claude manage your site, and choose which AI builds your pages.
What the MCP server does
MCP is a standard way for AI assistants to connect to other software. With the MCP server switched on, an AI agent such as Claude can create and edit listings, blog posts, members, pages and your site's design for you, when you ask it to.
Everything here is under PremiumPress ▸ Settings ▸ MCP server.
An agent key gives administrator-level access to your site, so treat it like a password. Your site should use HTTPS (an address starting https://). If it doesn't, the screen shows a warning, because keys would travel unprotected.
Connecting Claude Code
- Open the MCP server tile and switch on the API. The label changes to API is enabled. This switch saves straight away.
- Under Connect your AI agent is the MCP endpoint (Streamable HTTP), the address the agent connects to.
- Below it is a ready-made command for Claude Code. Click the box to select it, and copy it.
- Under Agent keys, type a New key label, for example "Claude on my laptop", and click Generate key.
- Copy the new key from the green box straight away.
- Paste the command into the terminal where you use Claude Code, replace the key placeholder at the end with your new key, and press Enter.
Keys work with Claude Code, Claude Desktop and the Claude Agent SDK. For claude.ai in a web browser, see the last section below.
Agent keys and access
Before you click Generate key, use What this key can do to limit the key. Every area is ticked to start with, which gives full access:
- Content — listings, blog, media
- Members — read & moderate
- Users — create, edit, delete accounts
- Design & branding
- Page layouts
- Marketplace orders & payouts — read only
- Read-only — view everything
For an agent that can look but not change anything, tick only Read-only — view everything. A key can only use the areas you tick. If you untick everything, the key gets full access, so always leave at least one ticked.
The Agent keys table lists each key with its Label, the start of the key, its Access, when it was Created and when it was Last used.
To stop an agent, click Revoke next to its key and confirm. It loses access immediately.
A key is shown only once, when you create it. If you lose it, it can't be shown again. Revoke it and generate a new one.
Connecting claude.ai on the web
claude.ai in a web browser can't use a pasted key. It needs OAuth, a sign-in and approve step, instead.
- Under claude.ai web (OAuth), switch it on. The label changes to OAuth is enabled.
- Copy the connector address shown below the switch.
- On claude.ai, go to Settings ▸ Connectors ▸ Add custom connector and paste the address. No key is needed.
- claude.ai sends you to your site to approve the connection. Sign in as an administrator and approve it.
OAuth needs HTTPS on a live site. Only administrators can approve a connection. Claude Code keeps using an agent key as before.
Adding your AI key
The Site Generator's Assistant, AI page building and generated hero images need a key from Anthropic (Claude) or OpenAI. Keys live in WordPress, not in the theme:
- Open Settings ▸ Connectors in the WordPress menu. (In Design, the AI assistant link under Connections goes straight there.)
- Click Install next to Anthropic or OpenAI. WordPress adds the connector for you.
- Paste your key into API key and click Save. Get a Claude key at platform.claude.com, or an OpenAI key at platform.openai.com.
Back in Design, AI assistant now shows On.
Choosing the AI for the site generator
The same tile has an AI site generator box. It chooses which AI writes your pages when you build a site from a description:
- Auto — use whichever key is set (Claude preferred)
- Anthropic (Claude)
- OpenAI (GPT)
The AI needs its own key from Anthropic or OpenAI, added under Settings ▸ Connectors (see Adding your AI key). The OpenAI key also creates generated hero images.
On Auto, Claude is used when its key is set, otherwise OpenAI. If you choose one provider and it has no key, the AI assistant stays offline. It does not switch to the other provider. Click Save changes after choosing.
