How to preserve widgets when updating theme

I am still following the procedure of inactivating and deleting the previous version of the theme, then replacing child theme template, then specifying menu locations.

All my widget settings seem to disappear, is there a way to preserve widget settings when following this upgrade procedure?

Uploading the new theme and then activating is working well for me. Still have to reset the menus and reinstall the child theme, but the widgets are fine.

are you deleting the old version before you activate the new? I do not, and that is working for me.

Ok, thanks Michael, when I do it this way which is:

    backup child theme
backup custom css (just in case)
Install and activate new version of the theme.
    resetup menu locations
    Test site, all looks good.
Delete older version of the theme

All the widget settings are preserved 🙂
