404 errors in WordPress using custom permalinks
WordPress uses permalinks to dynamically create your website URL’s however with the release of WordPress 3.1 there would appear to be some caching issues which can leave your website showing 404 errors.
The fix for this is very simple, you need to refresh your permalink cache. This is done by simply revisiting the page in your WordPress admin area, once the permalinks page is visitied the cache is automatically refreshed/updated and in most cases this will fix the 404 error.
