    Mark (hoping) et al,

Having played a bit with the new version development (V7) I would like to help so much, but despite even a PM to Mark I can't seem to make any impression that there is opportunity for FREE enhancements to your range of themes.

CURRENTLY the PP theme frame uses an outdated process (API V2) to determine the map location, which at best is iffy. The process also requires an API from Google, which the forum has some posts on.

Yes, I am making a plugin that will add enhanced features, but it will require users to go and add the hook manually, either copy paste or shortcode.

Some months ago we developed a new process of adding the gecoded data to the database of a DP install using API v3. I published a quick video online to share with someone (radio in the background sorry). I am not a video publisher, but I am sure you will gather from the video clip, that once you enter address fields, you get an interactive map within the submission form. Users drag the pin to dermine exact location. Done.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i1jDIbJwBpE

You can have this Mark, free of charge.

Secondly, the single post map output is another API V2 version, whilst functional still limits the creative use of maps. Using the API V3 you can add MULTIPLE instances of goole maps in the admin panel, deploying these as you wish. Single post, category view, sidebar etc.

The MAIN issue is that the DB will contain lat long coordinates that can creatively be used all over PP themes. For instance, if you have a travel directory, you can EASILY add a geo tagged image overlay, maing it possible to display images of the area where your listing is.

KML files contain so much data, and these can freely be used.

As a bonus, and utilizing your main widget area, a single map, focused on any area in the globe, can dynamically display all your listings by category.

    This is also still free.

As this functionality might not be what all users will do, this can be, and will be deployed as a plugin. In fact, if you only want to use geocoding for correct single post maps, you dont have to use all functions. If you want to display a streetview map, across the full width of the page, you can do that as well. The users will be able to choose their level of map use, or none at all.

WHAT IS THE POINT I AM TRYING TO MAKE ?

For the PP community installing and deploying this plugin will be quick, and provide all the functionailty I have mentioned here, as well as on other posts. Some users might struggle with the implementation, and updates to the PP framework, as the plugin might have to be re hooked and re hooked every time you make a new update.

BUT, you can make this easy and futureproof mapping on PP, adding all these enhanced features for your user base with a .............

    HOOK TO THE SUBMIT PAGE

Automated installs, automated submission form changes to incorporate API v3 geocoding and a choice of maps. And best of all, update proof.

Will you hook me up Mark? Please?

I look forward to complying with your stringent demands to ensure FULL compatibility.

I have published various links with mashups and test sites, but would be more than HAPPY to address any concerns or issues you might have with a test site url.

This is an example site, made with DirectoryPress V5 which should at least make you think I could actually be telling the truth, and have something valuable to enhance your range of themes.

The landing page is actually the submit page. Add text, add images and save. Save is submit button. It publishes automatically.

Just a hook Mark, just a hook ....

    Thank you Mark.
Would there be any other hooks available? As this is what is needed to enable users to start creating extensions.

    Awesome Mark,

We've been waiting for this feature for some time. I appreciate your effort to fit this coding in around everything else.

Can't wait to get my hands on the updated BETA!

Great News Mark. Does the database now contain the lat long coordinates as reference, or are you still using the api from google to geocode on the fly?

The available hooks .... would that include a possibility to hook into the submit form for PP?

    also added home page vide

Elizabeth, which submit form, do you mean packages/checkout?

it uses the google geo but accept long/lat so works on both, just tested with 50 listings on the map and its all good..you can create "custom queries" so u can decide what goes on the map.

    Thanks Mark

When you submit a listing in DP. You have the map refernce field in there as a hook I assume. So what I want is to replace that option by hooking into that specific spot. This will add the address fields, and do the geocoding at THAT stage, on submission.

If you do NOT add the lat long coordinates at submission, you are bound by 25000 query limit.
So, if you have 500 listings, that is 50 pageviews, and you are out for the day.

On the same thread, different plugin, I would like to be able to hook to that submission page to add the fetch meta aspect as well. A single hook on that page, combined with the ACE FANTASTIC EXCELLENT GREAT MOST SUPERIOR widget area you have created in V7 will make the MOST FANTASTIC GREATES MOST SUPERB AWESOME FANDABBYDOZY opportunity to make some MAGIC.

Of course I can add code etc to copy paste for users, but upgrades will be a mare. This hook can overcome all of that.

Of course if the same map refernce as yours can be used to hook, it will be possible to offer a variety of google based maps in the single post, category view, sidebars and anywhere really.

If it can't it can't. But if it can ....... we have some magic functions to share.

Best part of it Mark is that it is FREE. For all PP users, be that DP, RP etc.

Pretty please with a bag of sugar on it

I can't tell you how pleased I am that you two finally got it together and seem to be singing off the same hymsheet (old fashioned word for religious API), and at last we're going to see a properly integrated geo-location driven search function, instead of just a Google Map display.

While I have got your attention, can anyone guess how many times I have doubted my own sanity, AND the parentage (or not, as the case might be), of the very clever, intelligent individual, who put the familiar red "save button" at the bottom of the v7.0.1 version [Display Settings] [Layout] but labelled it [Reset All Options] but almost invisibly, so that when you're in hurry, and not paying attention, you just click on it to save everything?

    Terence.

Elizabeth: Re: "CURRENTLY the PP theme frame uses an outdated process (API V2) to determine the map location, which at best is iffy." You noticed! lol! I was pissed, until I corrected the zoom, but still fighting the API to determine pin point accuracy.

If you want to hire on, PPT has a "Partner" Section. You should register, because I like hiring people smarter than me, lol! And I have alot of work ahead using almost all PPT's. Hope to see your "Shingle" in the window soon!

When in doubt, read, ask, do.

Great Mark. Yes I read. I will enjoy when V.7 is stable though with the requested two features if possible in the other thread for RP. I just cant chance it anymore and must use only stable versions. I logged almost 74 hours this week alone. And without the sort order working correctly as reported by Sean and Andrew, I'm not able to test V.7 anymore. So I have to build around 6.7 until most of the issues are resolved. But the default sort order mixed in with private messages is a pretty big reason right now not to build any site until resolved. Hence the word Beta, lol!
