Menu Question – make main navigation and top navigation different

I am trying to make the Main Navigation and the Top Navigation links different. The Main Navigation is the way I want it – but the top just repeats what is on the Main Navigation. Selected different menus for both but the Main one is the only one that shows up…. hope this makes sense….. trying to put “LIKE US” on facebook at the top….. which I did create a menu for that….
