Email confirmation not working

I have noticed there are a lot of post that are about the email system and that it is working, but I can’t get it to work at this time.

When subscribing as new user

It does not send me a confirmation email and no confirmation link. I have checked the spam folder as well (using a gmail email account).

I have set the email settings, thank you pages, tried wordpress email confirmation on and off, added an email which I connected to the welcomes email, but still nothing. I tested this in firefox and in chrome.

The user submission does add the user as new user though (in wp user section) but not in the confirmed email subscribers section of the theme email section, which is ok because the user did not yet confirm.

What do I have to adjust to get the confirmation email / link being send?
